Saline Park

A few minutes from the village you can see one of the most suggestive and certainly most characteristic areas of Penna San Giovanni: Villa Saline, whose territory extends to the sources of the river that shares the same name, Salino.
Located at 389 metres above sea level, Villa Saline was annexed to the state property of the Holy Apostolic See, to which Penna was always very faithful, in 1292; the so-called “salt factory” was established there, the source of income and sustenance for the town.
As early as 1876 the curative-therapeutic properties of these natural salt-bromine-iodic-sulphurous waters were discovered but the onset of war put an end to the ancient exploitation of the springs.

Today Villa Saline is a splendid park with green lawns, lush aquatic vegetation, natural ponds, with special areas equipped for excellent picnics. Following the whispering noise of the water you can find the so-called “ALBERGO Gentilucci”, formerly a spa, as well as the old thermal water distribution plant. Above the Salino stream is the imposing bridge that rises over the original “wells” for salt extraction, the famous “Pozzo Poderoso”, so called for its dizzying depth.
